The National Security Agency is making the most of huge layoffs sweeping through Silicon Valley by poaching fired tech workers as part of its largest hiring spree in 30 years.
The intelligence agency has been trying to recruit workers over LinkedIn and said it will hire 3,000 people in what it described an ‘unprecedented hiring effort in 2023’.
Layoffs affecting big tech companies like Amazon and Meta began last year and have continued.
Last week Zoom fired around 1,500 workers, which was 13 percent of its workforce. In November Meta got rid of 11,000 employees as part of the largest cut in the company’s history.

The NSA has been targeting those from companies that both experienced layoffs and are expecting to face them, one of its senior recruiters told the Washington Times.
In a statement in January the agency said it was looking for workers in fields including: ‘computer science, cybersecurity, math, data science, engineering, intelligence analysis, language analysis, communications, business and accounting.’
‘NSA started reaching out through LinkedIn, through some of our career boards, specifically sending messages to people that we thought might be linked to some companies that either were in the news saying they are going to lay off or were predicted to be laid off,’ Parker told the Washington Times.
‘Just kind of let them know that we’re here and that we have this robust, ongoing hiring program,’ she added.
Of its job postings the majority were for engineers of ‘entry to senior level’ and most of them would require some work in the NSA’s headquarters in Fort Meade, Maryland.
As he announced the layoffs, the CEO of Zoom has said he would slash his own $1.1million salary by 98 percent.
Eric Yuan posted the notice to employees on Zoom Blog, letting them know that those impacted by the layoffs received an email last Tuesday.
He said that his own salary would be cut down to $22,000 this year, and that other executives would also see their salaries trimmed by 20 percent and none of them would receive annual bonuses in 2023.
Yuan said the layoffs impacted every department in the company, and that fired employees were going to receive up to 16 weeks salary and healthcare coverage.

Zoom is the latest tech giant to announce large layoffs after the industry saw brutal end to 2022.
In his message to employees posted 30 minutes before the emails were sent out, Yuan wrote: ‘We have made the tough but necessary decision to reduce our team by approximately 15 percent and say goodbye to around 1,300 hardworking, talented colleagues.’
‘I know this is a difficult message to hear, and certainly not one I ever wanted to deliver.’
In explaining the latest cuts, Yuan said the company saw a huge boom during the pandemic as many looked to Zoom as a means to stay connected and conduct business.
‘We needed to staff up rapidly to support the quick rise of users on our platform and their evolving needs,’ Yuan wrote. ‘Within 24 months, Zoom grew 3x in size to manage this demand while enabling continued innovation.’
Zoom, however, made mistakes when it failed to account how its growth was unsustainable, Yuan wrote.
In the post-pandemic world, users no longer relied on Zoom as much, meaning the company had to roll back its growth.
‘As the CEO and founder of Zoom, I am accountable for these mistakes,’ Yuan told employees as he announced his salary cut.

Along with the 16 weeks salary and health insurance coverage, the axed employees will also be given what would have been their 2023 annual bonuses.
Zoom is also offering those laid off stock option vesting for six months, as well as one-on-one coaching, workshops and networking sessions.
Following the news of the layoffs, Zoom’s stock jumped more than 7 percent, nearly reversing a downward trend that began on Thursday.

PayPal Holdings Inc., Alphabet Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. have all made plans to dismiss thousands of workers and since Nov, technology firms as a whole committed to 110,793 job cuts.
PayPal said Tuesday it will trim about 7 percent of its total workforce, or about 2,000 full-time workers, as the digital payments company contends with what it calls ‘the challenging macro-economic environment’.
PayPal said it will make the cuts over several weeks, with some of its organizations affected more than others.
The company did not further specify. PayPal is the parent of Venmo, Xoom and Honey, among other brands.
The company based in San Jose, California, is the latest in the technology sector to trim its headcount.
During the month of January alone, Google, Microsoft and Salesforce announced tens of thousands of layoffs.
Last year Meta got rid of 11,000 jobs. Employees received the confirmation about the cuts in a company-wide email sent early one morning. Staff were able to keep their email addresses for an extra day to say ‘farewell’.
Zuckerberg admitted that he ‘got it wrong’ in a message and that he ‘takes responsibility’ for the problems that led to the cuts – which made up 13 percent of Meta’s workforce.
