Among the dozens of revelations from the new biography of tech mogul Elon Musk is a new look inside the billionaire’s ‘brutal’ romance with Aquaman star Amber Heard that is referred to as a ‘dark vortex’ that left Musk appearing to those close to him as ‘the most depressed guy around.’
Musk, 52, first met Heard, 37, in 2012 while the actress was shooting Machete Kills in Los Angeles, at the time the star was in the throws of her tumultuous relationship with Johnny Depp.
When that marriage ended amid allegations of domestic abuse, Heard began quietly spending more time with the South African-born billionaire before finally confirming their status just months after the ink was dry on her divorce from Depp.
Over the course of the next 12 months, the couple were pictured with each other out on the town with Musk even going so far as to fly his entire brood to Australia to visit her while she shot Aquaman.
The couple dated for around 12 months between 2017 and 2018. But after a series of on-again/off-again reports they finally called it quits for good in February 2018.

In multiple interviews following their split in 2018, both seemed to go to exhaustive lengths to describe their time together as bliss, their break-up amicable and practical stemming from their busy schedules as well as stressing that they remain friends.
However, the new book, penned by Walter Isaacson, describes the relationship as a ‘dark vortex,’ while Musk’s family, including his beloved brother, Kimbal, felt as though the relationship with the actress was ‘toxic’ with Musk’s chief-of-staff comparing her to ‘the Joker in Batman’ who ‘thrives on destabilizing everything.’
Among the other revelations from the recently published biography is that Heard spent two months designing the costume of the Overwatch character Mercy so that she could roleplay for the X owner. Musk confirmed that this week by posting a picture of Heard in the costume this week.
In a December 2018 feature in The Hollywood Reporter, Heard said that Musk first took an interest in her all the way back in 2012 when she was still with Johnny Depp. At the time, Musk was 41 and Heard was 26.
The pair met on the set of Robert Rodriguez’s Machete Kills. According to the magazine, Musk emailed Rodriguez to ask him to send the actress ‘a note’ asking her to lunch in Los Angeles.
‘Am not angling for a date. I know she’s in a long-term relationship, but… Amber just seems like an interesting person to meet,’ the South African wrote.
The book quotes Head as joking: ‘I guess I could be called a geek for someone who can also be called a hot chick,’ she jokes. Musk took her for a Tesla ride and Heard ‘decided he looked attractive for a rocket engineer.’
Their next meeting was in line for the Met Gala in New York May 2016. Heard was about to divorce Depp and found Musk was a ‘breath of fresh air’.
A few weeks later Musk came to visit Heard in Miami, where she was working. He flew her up to Cape Canaveral where a Falcon 9 launch was scheduled.
Heard ‘thought it was the most interesting date she had been on’, the book claims.
For Musk’s birthday that June, she gave him a surprise visit to the Tesla factory in California by flying in from Italy where she was working.
Heard ‘hid in the back of a Tesla and popped out’ when Musk came by.

The couple first went Instagram official in April 2017, months after her divorce from Depp was finalized, with a picture from a wildlife sanctuary in Australia while the actress was filming Aquaman showing them together as Musk displayed a lipstick mark from a kiss on his cheek.
Rumors that the pair were seeing each other go back to 2016 when they were pictured in Miami and London together, around the time Musk divorced Westworld star Talulah Riley.
A month later, Heard was photographed with Musk and his sons, Damian, Kai, Saxon, Xavier – now Vivian – and Griffin, at the Sydney Opera House.
By August of that year, they had endured their first break-up with both citing their busy schedules and the stress of a long-distance relationship as the reason.
Heard announced the split on Instagram saying the two ‘care deeply for one another and remain close.’
Later that month, the SpaceX founder commented on one of Heard’s Instagram post saying: ‘Btw, just to clear up some of the press storm this weekend, although Amber and I did break up, we are still friends, remain close and love one another.’
‘Well, she broke up with me more than I broke up with her, I think. I was really in love, and it hurt bad,’ Musk told Rolling Stone later that year.
Musk went on to say that the depression he suffered because of the break up that nearly caused him to miss a new Tesla launch.
‘I’ve been in severe emotional pain for the last few weeks,’ the told the magazine while the wounds were still raw.

‘Severe. It took every ounce of will to be able to do the Model 3 event and not look like the most depressed guy around. For most of that day, I was morbid. And then I had to psych myself up: drink a couple of Red Bulls, hang out with positive people and then, like, tell myself: ‘I have all these people depending on me. All right, do it!,’ he added.
The Model 3 event took place in July 2017.
Musk talked about his relationships later in the interview saying: ‘If I’m not in love, if I’m not with a long-term companion, I cannot be happy. I will never be happy without having someone. Going to sleep alone kills me.’
‘When I was a child, there’s one thing I said: “I never want to be alone.” That’s what I would say… I don’t want to be alone,’ Musk went on.
‘Elon and I had a beautiful relationship, and we have a beautiful friendship now, one that was based on our core values,’ Heard told the Reporter after the breakup.
Those values included ‘intellectual curiosity,’ ‘ideas and conversation’ as well as a ‘love for science.’ The also shared a love of conservative icon writer Ayn Rand.
‘We just bonded on a lot of things that speak to who I am on the inside. I have so much respect for him,’ she added. When asked about Musk’s more eccentric side, Heard brushed it off saying: ‘He’s not boring.’
New Biography titled Elon Musk, by Walter Isaacson, was released this week
In the new biography, Musk says that he was ‘not bred for domestic tranquility.’
In January 2018, People quoted a source close to the pair as saying: ‘They’re definitely back together.’
That same source said that Musk never gave up on their relationship because he ‘finds her brilliant in an artistic way.’
The magazine reported that they welcomed 2018 together in Chile alongside Musk’s brother, Kimbal.
Kimbal told Isaacson for the new book that he felt Heard was ‘just so toxic.’
The reunification didn’t last long though, Page Six reported on February 1 that they were broken up again.
A source told the tabloid that it was Musk’s decision to end things.
‘Elon and Amber broke up this week. Elon made the decision to end things, and Amber agreed. The timing just wasn’t right, but they still care about each other,’ the source said.
According to the book, the relationship was over long before February and possibly ended around New Year in South America.
The book says: ‘When they got to the hotel [in Brazil,] Elon and Amber had another of their flamethrower fights.
‘She locked herself in the room and started yelling she was afraid she would be attacked and that Elon had taken her passport.’

Kimbal said: ‘She really is a very good actress so she will say things that you’re like: ”Wow, maybe she’s telling you the truth”, but she isn’t. The way she can create her own reality reminds me of my dad.’
In the book, Amber admits they had an argument and that ‘she got rather dramatic’ but claims it was resolved that evening, which happened to be New Year’s Eve.
Heard showed Isaacson videos and photos from that night which showed her and Musk: Musk wishes her a happy new year and kisses her ‘passionately’ on the lips.
The book says: ‘She (Heard) came to the conclusion that Musk cultivated drama because he needed a lot of stimuli to keep him invigorated.
‘Even after they broke up for good, the embers endured. “I love him very much,” she says. She also understands him well.
‘”Elon loves fire, and sometimes it burns him,” she says.’
Isaacson writes that Grimes, the singer who is mother to three of Musk’s children, was a ‘good partner’ for him unlike Heard because her ‘chaos was undergirded by kindness and even sweetness’
The new book says: ‘Most of his relationships involve psychological turmoil.
‘The most agonizing of them all was with the actress Amber Heard who drew him into a dark vortex that lasted more than a year and produced deep-seated pain that lingers to this day.
‘It was brutal’, the author writes.
Kimbal says in the book that it’s ‘really sad’ that his brother ‘falls in love with these people who are really mean to him.’ He said: ‘They’re beautiful, no question, but they have a very dark side and Elon knows that they’re toxic.’
Isaacson writes that Grimes, the singer who is mother to three of Musk’s children, was a ‘good partner’ for him unlike Heard because her ‘chaos was undergirded by kindness and even sweetness.’
Grimes says: ‘My Dungeons and Dragons alignment would probably be chaotic good, whereas Amber’s is probably chaotic evil. He’s attracted to chaotic evil.
‘It’s about his father and what he grew up with and he’s quick to fall back into being treated badly. He associates love with being mean or abusive. There’s an Errol-Amber through line.’
